The German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) with its more than 2,500 employees is the largest biomedical research institute in Germany. At DKFZ, more than 1,000 scientists investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors and endeavor to find new strategies to prevent people from getting cancer. They develop novel approaches to make tumor diagnosis more precise and treatment of cancer patients more successful. Jointly with Heidelberg University Hospital, DKFZ has established the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg where promising approaches from cancer research are translated into the clinic. The staff of the Cancer Information Service (KID) offers information about the widespread disease of cancer for patients, their families, and the general public. The center is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers. Ninety percent of its funding comes from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the remaining ten percent from the State of Baden-Württemberg.
Cooperational Research Program
of the Foundation Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, Heidelberg, with the Ministry of Science, Culture and Sport
The DKFZ-MOST (Ministry of Science, Culture and Sport) program in cancer research aims at establishment and enhancement of scientific collaboration between scientists from the DKFZ and all academic institutions in Israel. This aims have been realized for 35 years by collaborative work in the laboratories of both partners and exchange of scientific know-how and experimental materials. Regular mutual scientific workshops and joint publications represent outstanding achievements. On its onset in 1976 the program started with three running projects and developend over the years to 15 ongoing projects per phase (each project lasts for three years). All projects consist of an Israeli and mostly one DKFZ-Subproject. Only in well-reasoned and exceptional cases a German subproject leader can take part who is not employed at the DKFZ. Up to now 144 projects have been supported within this joint program. In Israel almost all the research universities and some of the leading hospitals have participated. The scientific success of the program is shown by the extensive number of publications – more than 1000 publications up to 2010 - that were published by the participating scientists in internationally recognized scientific journals. The program not only resulted in fruitful scientific exchange of knowledge but also achieved many close friendships between Israeli and German scientists.
