High BPA levels linked to male sexual problems Study in China is likely to bring further scrutiny of  the common chemical :

Exposure to high levels of  a controversial chemical found in thousands of  everyday plastic products appears to cause erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems in men, according to a new study published Wednesday. The study, funded by the federal government and published in the journal Human Reproduction, is the first to examine the impact of bisphenol A, or BPA, on the reproductive systems of human males. Previous studies have involved mice or rats.
The research comes as government agencies debate the safety of BPA, a compound that is found in thousands of  consumer products ranging from dental sealants to canned food linings and that is so ubiquitous it has been detected in the urine of  93 percent of  the U.S. population. Researchers focused on 634 male workers at four factories in China who were exposed to elevated levels of  BPA. They followed the men over five years and compared their sexual health with that of  male workers in other Chinese factories where BPA was not present.
The men handling BPA were four times as likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction and seven times as likely to have difficulty with ejaculation, said De-Kun Li, a scientist at the Kaiser Foundation Research Institute, which conducted the study. BPA, which was developed in the 1930s as a synthetic version of  estrogen, appears to throw off the hormonal balance in the human body, Li said.
The workers studied did not have to spend years in the factory to develop problems -- sexual dysfunction began in new workers after just months on the job, Li said. The workers had levels of exposure to BPA that were 50 times what an average U.S. man faces. But the findings raise questions about whether exposure at lesser levels can affect sexual function, Li said. "This was a highly exposed group, and we see the effect," he said. "Now, we have to worry about lower-level exposure."
Li said the study is significant because chemical manufacturers and other defenders of  BPA have long complained that research raising questions about its health effects was conducted on laboratory animals. "Critics dismissed all the animal studies, saying, 'Show us the human studies,' " Li said. "Now we have a human study, and this can't just be dismissed."
Since BPA is most readily absorbed through food and drink containers, health advocates have been particularly focused on how the Food and Drug Administration is regulating the chemical. The agency has maintained that BPA is safe. But a growing body of research over the past decade has linked BPA to a range of health effects in laboratory animals, including infertility, weight gain, behavioral changes, early-onset puberty, cancer and diabetes.
Steven G. Hentges of the American Chemistry Council, which represents the chemical industry, said the new study has little meaning for consumers. "Although this study presents interesting information, it has little relevance to average consumers who are exposed to trace levels of  BPA," he said.
Still, concern about the chemical among consumers has created pressure in the marketplace. Manufacturers have pledged to take BPA out of  baby bottles and water bottles. A handful of  jurisdictions around the country have banned BPA from baby products, and similar measures are pending in state legislatures.
Last year, the FDA's scientific advisory board criticized the agency for ignoring more than 100 academic and government studies that linked BPA with health effects. The Obama administration has pledged a "fresh look" at the issue, and the FDA is expected to complete that review by the end of this month. Meanwhile, the federal government announced last month that it is giving $30 million to researchers across the country over the next two years in an aggressive push to advance knowledge about BPA and end the debate about its safety.

NEW YORK _ Male factory workers in China who got very high doses of  a chemical that's been widely used in hard plastic bottles had high rates of  sexual problems, researchers reported Wednesday.
Heavy exposure to BPA, or bisphenol A, on the job was linked to impotence and lower sexual desire and satisfaction, according to the study, which adds to concerns about BPA's effects on most consumers.
The men in the study experienced BPA levels about 50 times higher than those faced by typical American men, said researcher Dr. De-Kun Li. "We don't know" whether more typical doses have similar effects, he said. People shouldn't be alarmed by the finding, said Li, a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist at Kaiser Permanente's research division in Oakland, California. But he said it would be prudent to limit exposure to BPA while scientists look for any effects from lower doses. The U.S. government recently announced new funding for research into BPA's effects.
Li is lead author of  the latest study, published online Wednesday by the journal Human Reproduction. The work was financed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
BPA is used in a wide variety of consumer products, including some hard plastic bottles and metal food or beverage cans. Several makers of baby bottles recently said they had stopped using the chemical. Some 90 per cent of  the U.S. population carries detectable levels in the urine.
Scientists are concerned that BPA exposure might harm the reproductive and nervous systems, and possibly promote prostate and breast cancers. Last year, a preliminary study linked BPA to possible risks for heart disease and diabetes.
The Food and Drug Administration concluded last year that trace amounts of  BPA that leach out of  bottles and food containers are not dangerous. But the FDA is now reviewing that stance after criticism from its scientific advisers. For the new research, Li and colleagues studied 164 factory workers in China who were exposed to high levels of  BPA on the job. They were compared to 386 other men in the same town who either worked at other factories or were married to factory workers. The scientists measured BPA exposure through air sampling, and interviewed the workers about their sexual functioning.
Compared to the other workers, men with high BPA exposure were about four times as likely to report trouble achieving erections, about seven times as likely to say they had difficulty ejaculating, and about four times as likely to report low sex drive or low satisfaction with their sex lives.
The effects are dramatic and "pretty clearly related to the exposure," said Linda Birnbaum, director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, who was not involved in the research.
The finding fits in with animal studies and should be followed up by research in the general population, she said. Her institute said last month it will spend more money on BPA-related research, bringing the total to US$30 million over two years.
Steven Hentges, a BPA expert and official with the American Chemistry Council, an industry group, said the work is "probably not very relevant for consumers."
For one thing, the reported 50-fold difference in exposure seems to be an underestimate because of  how it was calculated, he said. In addition, he said, the workers inhaled BPA or got it on their skin. Consumers get it through diet instead, which lets the body detoxify it, Hentges said.
Li said the workers probably were exposed not only through inhalation and skin contamination but also by swallowing BPA powder that contaminated their food. He said he didn't know which route was most prominent in the Chinese factories.

* Pegang kedua-dua hujung tali di antara ketiak dan siku lalu pijak ia bagi memastikan ukuran yang sesuai. Sekiranya berlebihan, simpul tali mengikut kesesuaian.
* Digalakkan melompat hingga ketinggian tidak melebihi 30 sentimeter.
* Sertakan muzik.
* Bagi menguatkan otot kaki, selalu melompat dengan menjengketkan kedua-dua belah kaki dan melompat setempat.
* Tukar cara melompat daripada sebelah kaki, kedua-dua belah kaki, skip, berlari-lari anak atau mengangkat lutut setiap 30 saat bagi mengelakkan penat atau bosan.
* Jika penat, perlahankan pusingan tali dan pastikan tumit kaki diletakkan ke lantai sebelum melompat semula.
* Lakukan aktiviti regangan menyejukkan badan bagi memastikan tiada kecederaan berlaku.

BANGI, 2 Dis. 2010 – Seorang saintis Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) sedang berusaha dengan sebuah makmal swasta di Nilai untuk mengeluarkan secara besar besaran antibodi monoklonal (mAbs) untuk mengubati barah. Prof Madya Dr Nurina Anuar dari Jabatan Kejuruteraan Kimia dan Proses, Fakulti Kejuruteraan, berkata beliau sedang bekerjasama dengan InnoBiologics Sdn Bhd, sebuah anak syarikat kerajaan di Nilai, mengeluarkan mAbs itu secara besar-besaran untuk dipasarkan.  Beliau telah berjaya mengadaptasi dan menguji di makmalnya cara membiak dan mengeluarkan secara optimum antibodi monoklonal  dengan menggunakan kultur sel mamalia yang tidak mengandungi serum di dalam satu sistem reaktor bio. Usaha membuang serum itu amat rumit sekali tetapi ia perlu dibuat untuk menyingkirkan beberapa keburukannya seperti pencemaran, terutamanya apabila ubatnya diguna untuk manusia, kata saintis yang mempunyai kepakaran dalam bidang teknologi sel mamalia dan tumbuhan, dan mikrobiologi perusahaan.  Langkah menggunakan sel mamalia seperti hamster atau tikus untuk kultur atau membiak antibodi monoklonal, sejenis protein pergabungan semula yang aktif, adalah rumit sekali kerana serum dalam sel mamalia adalah hos atau tuan rumah kepada virus, bakteria dan parasit.Serum boleh dicemari bahan pencemaran lain seperti toksin, racun perosak, racun herba, logam berat, antibiotik, dan mikroorganisma. “Tetapi kebaikan utama mAbs sebagai agen terapi bagi mengubati barah ialah kebolehannya untuk memburu hanya sel barah dan memusnahkan mereka.

“Kesan sampingan mAbs pula, adalah rendah dan ia boleh direka untuk ditambah aktiviti biologi atau fungsi lain, selain daripada melekatkan antibodinya kepada antigen atau bahan memudaratkan dalam badan,” katanya.  Dr Nurina telah memperoleh PhD dalam jurusan Mikrobiologi (Teknologi Sel Mamalia) dari  University of Surrey, United Kingdom, pada 1999 selepas lulus ijazah MSc (Mikrobiologi – Teknologi Sel Tumbuhan) dari UKM pada 1991 di mana juga beliau memperolehi ijazah sarjana mudanya dalam jurusan mikrobiologi  pada 1987.  Beliau berkhidmat sebagai pegawai penyelidik di Universiti Sains Malaysia untuk satu jangka masa sebelum memasuki UKM sebagai seorang tutor dan pensyarah pada 1998.

Beliau berkata, mengikut laporan Pendaftar Barah Nasional 2008, kadar kes barah adalah sebanyak 100.2 kes bagi tiap-tiap 100,000 lelaki dan 123 ke untuk tiap-tiap 100,000 wanita. Barah payudara (breast cancer) merupakan barah yang tertinggi di Malaysia dengan 18%, diikuti barah usus besar dan dubur ((11.9%) dan barah paru-paru (7.4%). “Jawapan untuk penyakit yang mudaratkan nyawa  atau barah ialah antibodi monoklonal (mAbs) yang telah banyak dipakai sebagai agen terapi,” katanya.

Tetapi jumlah kos perubatan untuk seorang pesakit barah adalah tinggi, misalnya, US$350,000 untuk Herceptin, sejenis ubat untuk barah payudara. Satu cara untuk menurunkan harga ubat-ubat ini ialah dengan mempelajari teknologi berkaitan untuk mengeluarkan ubat itu di sini. Oleh sebab itu, beliau sedang bekerjasama dengan InnoBiologics Sdn Bhd
untuk mengeluarkan mAbs secara besar-besaran untuk mengubati barah. InnoBiologics Sdn Bhd, yang mempunyai kontrak untuk mengeluarkan ubat terapi barah, adalah sebuah syarikat dikhususkan dalam teknologi pembiakan sel mamalia. Ia dilengkapi dengan kemudahan yang terbaik untuk pengeluaran bahan bio farmasi. Kemudahannya juga dibina mengikuti keperluan ketetapan Agensi Perubatan Eropah (EMEA) dan  Pentadbiran Makanan dan Dadah Amerika Syarikat (FDA). Dr Nurina juga berkata para saintis telah menggunakan sel mamalia untuk mencipta  protein yang kompleks yang boleh digunakan sebagai bahan bio farmasi atau perubatan.“Ini bukan satu bidang yang baru kerana sel mamalia telah digunakan untuk mencipta protein khusus, seperti vaksin tetapi sel mamalia adalah yang kompleks sekali. Kalau orang ada pilihan, mereka akan menggunakan bakteria, sel tumbuhan atau kulat.” Sebagai contoh, beliau berkata insulin, sejenis protein yang mulanya dihasilkan daripada sel mamalia dan oleh sebab proses pengeluarannya begitu rumit, para saintis pada 1980an telah mengasingkan gennya untuk dipindah ke sel bakteria untuk menghasilkan insulin. Oleh sebab itu, segala penyelidikan menggunakan sel mamalia harus memenuhi syarat Amalan Pembuatan yang Terbaik (atau CGMP) kerana hasilnya adalah bahan bio farmasi atau perubatan yang aktif. “Jadi, ketetapan untuk keselamatan bahan perubatan ini adalah lebih kompleks kerana ia diberikan melalui suntikan. Pengeluarannya harus memenuhi syarat piawaian CGMP,” katanya

Makanan dan minuman yang berwarna biasanya akan lebih menarik, apalagi warnanya yang cerah-cerah. Tetapi hati-hati dengan zat pewarna makanan buatan, karena tidak semua zat pewarna makanan aman untuk kesehatan. Lebih baik gunakan pewarna makanan yang alami / semulajadi, jika takut bahaya akan zat pewarna makanan dapat mengganggu kesehatan. Nah, berikut ini adalah bahan-bahan pewarna alami makanan dan bagaimana membuatnya.
1.   Daun Suji
Daun suji bisa dipakai untuk warna hijau. Biasanya daun suji dicampur dengan daun pandan, sehingga juga memberikan aroma harum pada makanan , kue atau minuman Anda. Cara membuatnya, iris halus daun suji dan daun pandan, haluskan dengan cara ditumbuk atau diblender, kemudian saring dan peras, tambahkan air kapur sirih sebagai pengawet, masukkan ke dalam botol tertutup dan simpan di lemari es.
2.   Kayu Secang
Manfaatkan batang kayu secang untuk memberi warna merah pada makanan. Cara membuatnya, batang secang yang masih basah serut kemudian keringkan. Serutan batang secang yang telah kering rebus dengan air kemudian saring, campurkan ke dalam adonan atau bahan yang akan diwarnai. Kayu secang bisa diperoleh di toko yang menjual jamu tradisional.
3.   Angkak
Angkak bisa menggantikan warna merah sintetis. Contoh penggunaan angkak untuk pewarna makanan atau minuman diantaranya adalah anggur, keju, sayuran, pasta ikan, kecap ikan, minuman beralkohol, aneka macam kue, dan produk olahan daging seperti sosis.Cara menggunakannya adalah diseduh dengan air panas, air seduhan pertama lebih baik dibuang karena rasanya pahit. Setelah seduhan ketiga baru saring lalu haluskan.
4.   Bunga Telang
Bunga telang berwarna biru keunguan bisa digunakan sebagai warna alami biru pada makanan. Cara menggunakannya, cuci bersih bunga telang, remas-remas atau tumbuk dengan sedikit air matang, kemudian saring. Atau, rebus bunga telang hingga bunga layu dan airnya berwarna biru, kemudian saring dan ambil airnya. Jika ingin menyimpan untuk waktu yang lama,bunga telang keringkan dengan dijemur di bawah sinar matahari, kemudian masukkan ke dalam kemasan kering dan tertutup.
5.   Kunyit
Untuk mendapatkan warna kuning dari kunyit, parut kunyit hingga halus, kemudian peras atau campurkan langsung ke makanan.
6.   Kluwek, Abu Merang dan tinta cumi
Kluwek, abu merang dan tinta cumi dapat digunakan sebagai pewarna hitam alami untuk makanan. Misalnya untuk membuat kue yang berwarna hitam, bisa menggunakan abu merang dengan cara abu merang dibakar kemudian diayak, atau kluwak yang berkualitas baik dipecahkan, kemudian ambil daging buahnya, kemudian haluskan dan dicampur dengan bumbu lainnya. Bisa juga dengan tinta cumi yang dilarutkan dengan air.

Persekitaran suhu sejuk yang dimaksudkan di sini adalah suhu tempat kerja anda yang bersuhu kurang dari 24Celcius. Umpamanya suasana anda bekerja yang bersuhu 18C atau 20C atau 21C adalah berisiko. Apabila berada dalam suasana sejuk dan sedentari, pernafasan anda menjadi amat perlahan dan penarikan udara ke dalam paru-paru tidak secara dalam dalam atau maksimum! Ia diburukkan lagi dengan tindak balas refleks rongga hidung anda yang bengkak mengembang ( Edema kerana dipenuhi air atau darah ). Tindakbalas otomatik ini adalah usaha semulajadi  badan anda bagi menghangatkan udara yang masuk ke dalam badan melalui rongga hidung. Badan anda cuba sedaya upayanya bagi memastikan udara yang masuk ke dalam peparu adalah bersuhu 37C. Akibatnya - sedikit saja udara dapat masuk ke dalam peparu kerana rongga hidung anda telah sempit.... Jika anda hipersensitif, rongga trachea dan bronchus serta bronchiole pula akan menyempitkan rongga mereka bagi memperlahankan udara sejuk dari masuk ke peparu. Ingatlah bahawasanya beriadah adalah satu  bentuk cara berehat yang baik!! yang penting sekali adalah mematikan punca segala galanya iaitu suhu terlampau sejuk. Pihak pengurusan sesebuah bangunan dan jurutera bangunan seharusnya peka terhadap pengawalan suhu bilik dikekalkan pada suhu optimum iaitu 25C bagi mengekal serta memelihara tahap kesihatan manusia!!!


Mistletoe Makes Headlines

‘Holistic unit will ‘tarnish’ university’s reputation’ the headline read. As I read on, my blood started to boil. When I got to the quote from the ‘professor of alternative medicine’, I nearly choked on my tahini toast. By the end of the article my stomach was making origami; I had indigestion and I was angry.
Aberdeen University is considering setting up a chair funded by a clinic that uses mistletoe to treat cancer patients.
Cause for celebration you might well think? Apparently not.
The news has triggered a ‘furious reaction from mainstream scientists’ according to Sunday’s piece in The Observer. ‘How dare students carry out studies into a non-toxic cancer treatment!’ the researchers must be railing. ‘ Don’t they realize the ONLY way to treat cancer patients is to put them through the excruciating – and humiliating – horrors of poisoning, cutting and burning!’ they’re surely saying, shaking their heads in puzzlement.
According to reports, the Raphael Medical Centre – an anthroposophical clinic – would provide £1.5 million to fund the chair for five years; the other £1.5 million would come from the German company Software AG. So if the proposed research centre isn’t taking away government grants, why is the scientific community so up in arms? For those who profit from the holy trinity of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery – the research centre represents a direct threat to their bottom line.
What would happen if the students discovered there was a way to heal patients, without poisoning them? What if the students found that anthroposophical medicine actually works?
You don’t have to look far to find evidence that it does. The AnthroMed Library has over 600 articles, documents and research papers on the subject.
Anthroposophy is based on the principle of treating the body, mind and soul of the patient and includes therapies such as mistletoe and homeopathy. I’ve written about both treatments in the past, but for new subscribers, here is a little re-cap:
Kissing Cancer Goodbye
8 MIILLION cancer patients have benefited from Mistletoe – in conjunction with conventional therapies – over the past few decades, according to one report from the Mapapo Institute (German – Argentine Institute for Oncologic and Immunologic Investigations).
Iscador, a specific extract of mistletoe, has been used in controlled pilot studies in the Berlin University, Witten/Herdecke, Germany and the University of California, USA, for breast, colon, prostate, brain, intestine, ovary, stomach and lung cancer.
A major 30-year-long study with more than 35,000 participants reported that mistletoe extract greatly improved survival rate for a wide variety of cancers, including breast cancer. Study participants who used Iscador in conjunction with conventional treatment survived 40% longer than those who didn’t use the plant therapy. Not only can mistletoe improve survival time in a wide range of cancers, but it has also been shown to help patients tolerate conventional cancer treatments and improves cancer related fatigue.
And what about homeopathy?
AKA, mainstream medicine’s favourite whipping boy. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of blogging about a German man who beat pancreatic cancer thanks to homeopathy. Emil Brehm was diagnosed in 2004- the same year Steve Jobs discovered he had the deadly disease – and today, more than seven years later he is still very much alive. You can read his miraculous story here. But that’s just anecdotal evidence! I can hear you scolding. Well, what’s wrong with an anecdote, if it’s true? I’d have to argue. Nevertheless, there are plenty of peer-reviewed studies on homeopathy and cancer if you care to take a look.
One study, published in the February 2010 issue of the International Journal of Oncology found that homeopathy works as well as an expensive breast cancer drug.
Researchers from the USA and India, found the cancer killing effects of the remedies Carcinosin 30C and Phtytolacca decandra 200C showed similar activity to Taxol the most commonly used chemotherapeutic drug for breast cancer… but without the nasty side effects of course.
Patients with brain cancer have also been cured thanks to homeopathy alone.
252 patients with brain tumours were treated at the Prasanta Banerji Homeopathic Research Foundation – between 1996 and 2001.
The 91 patients who were treated exclusively with the remedies Ruta and Calc Phos had an average survival time of 92 months whereas 11 patients who had been treated conventionally, and used homeopathy only as a supplement, survived for 20 months. 7% of the homeopathy only patients had a complete cure. And yet according to the so-called ‘professor of alternative medicine’ quoted in the Observer, anthroposophical medicine doesn’t work:
‘Anthroposophical medicine has no basis in science. Its concepts were dreamed up by Steiner and are based on mystical thinking,’ says Edzard Ernst, professor of alternative medicine at Exeter University.

So how qualified is Professor Ernst to cast ‘expert’ judgements on alternative medicine?
Not at all apparently.
‘I never completed any courses,’ was his response, when quizzed about his credentials recently.
According to Young, a registered homeopath and blogger: ‘No investigator has discovered any evidence of his enrollment in any alternative medicine training school or college and Professor Ernst has not published any alternative medicine educational credentials at all, beyond his claim to have them.’
Is this some kind of joke? I mean, you couldn’t make it up.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking to Phillip Day founder of The Campaign for Truth in Medicine and author of Cancer: Why We’re Still Dying to Know the Truth. This is what he had to say on the matter:
‘Professor Edzard Ernst is a false-flag defender of complementary medicine. Asking him to comment on complementary medicine is like telling the wolf that someone’s been in the hen house. If you want people to hate policemen, you dress up somebody as a policeman and get them to go around bashing old ladies over the head.’
You might chuckle – but really, there’s nothing funny about suppressing and skewing information that might help cancer patients; especially those for whom conventional medicine has failed.
No punch line this time I’m afraid. A punching bag would be great though.
